Christmas for Fashion Addicts – Day 14/24. Instead of buying a garment for your presentee you could as well organize a fashionable trip. From December 23rd the city of Hamburg (Germany) is worth a visit for all fashion aficionados: The Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe will be hosting an exhibition called “Alexander McQueen. Inspirations”. On show will be about 30 garments of his last collections for his own label, Alexander McQueen, as well as some dresses the designer made for the French house Givenchy. The exhibition runs from December 23 until May 6th.

In der Hansestadt ist ab dem 23. Dezember die Ausstellung „Alexander McQueen. Inspirations“ zu sehen. Mit rund 30 Exponaten der letzten Kollektionen seiner eigenen Linie sowie Entwürfen für das Haus Givenchy, ehrt die Ausstellung im Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe das kreative Schaffen Alexander McQueens. Die Ausstellung ist bis zum 6.Mai zu sehen.
Daphne Guinness’ private collection at the FIT. If you can make it to New York before mid January 2012 don’t miss the chance to check out the special exhibition “Daphne Guinness” at the Fashion Institue of Technology (FIT) museum. 1967 born Daphne Guinness is of British/Irish decent and an offspring to the famous brewery clan. She and works as an artist but Daphne Guinness currently is more famous for her way unique sense of style and her extensive wardrobe. The show at the FIT displays about 100 pieces of Guinness’ privates collection, curated by FIT Museum’s Director Valerie Steele. Among the clothes and accessories are rare and custom-made garments such as a cape by Alexander McQueen. Daphne Guinness Kleiderschrank im FIT in New York. Wer bis Mitte Januar 2012 noch die Gelegenheit hat, nach New York zu reisen, sollte sich die Sonder-Ausstellung „Daphne Guinness“ ansehen. Die 1967 geborene britisch-irische Künstlerin mit Wohnsitz in New York, ist ein Nachfahre des bekannten Brauerei-Clans und ist momentan mehr für ihre exzellenten Modegeschmack und ihr auffälliges Styling bekannt, als für ihre Kunst. Das Museum des Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) zeigt zurzeit 100 ausgewählte Stücke aus Daphne Guinness’ eigenem Archiv – darunter Sonderanfertigungen für sie durch Alexander McQueen. Kuratiert wurde die Ausstellung von Museumsdirektorin Valerie Steele. Die unten eingebetteten Videos sind Video-Interviews mit Guinness und Stelle; die Ausstellung ist noch bis 16. Januar zu sehen.
Walter van Beirendonck exhibition at MoMu in Belgium. The Antwerp-based MoMu (Mode Museum) is currently hosting an exhibition about one of the cities most famous inhabitants – fashion designer Walter van Beirendonck. Van Beirendonck was born in 1957 in Brecht (Belgium) before moving to Antwerp where he started studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. After his graduation he founded his eponymous label and became part of so-called “Antwerp Six”. But Walter van Beirendonck is not only a fashion designer but also one of the fashion world’s most politicizing and inspiring creatives. He also kept a close connection to his former school and in 2007 became head of the department of the Royal Academy of Antwerp. The exhibition at the Mode Musum in Antwerp casts light on the three decades of Walter van Beirendonck’s career. The show displays lots of his fashion which is opposite to what’s typically regarded as Belgian fashion (austere, dark, deconstructed) but colorful, vibrant, provocative and inspired by pop to porn to politics. Besides clothing Walter van Beirendonck has collaborated with photographer Nick Knight/SHOWstudio.com, stylist Simon Foxton and GQ Style UK and created a photography/video project. The exhibition Walter Van Beirendonck “Dream the world awake” runs until February 19th, 2012.

Walter van Beirendonck Ausstellung im MoMu in Belgien. Das Antwerpener MoMu (Mode Museum) zeigt momentan eine Ausstellung über die bisher 30-jährige Karriere des Walter van Beirendonck – eines der berühmtesten Kinder der Stadt. Geboren wurde van Beirendonck zwar in Brecht, ist seit seinem Studium an der königlichen Akademie in Antwerpen aber der belgischen Hafenstadt treu. Nach seinem Studium gründete Walter van Beirendonck hier sein nach ihm benanntes Label und wurde im Rahmen der sogenannten „Antwerpener Sechs“ bekannt. Seither macht er das Gegenteil dessen, was typischerweise als belgische Mode bezeichnet wird (dekonstruiert, ernsthaft, zurückhaltend) sondern bunt, provozierend, laut und inspiriert von Popkultur über Porno bis Politik. Neben Kleidungsstücken zeigt die Ausstellung auch ein Foto/Videoprojekt des Designers in Kooperation Nick Knight/SHOWstudio.com, Stylist Simon Foxton und der Zeitschrift GQ Style UK. Die Ausstellung ist noch bis zum 19. Februar 2012 im MoMu zu sehen.
„Sporting Life“ – eine Ausstellung des Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Ob Schwimmen, Segeln oder Radfahren – jede Sportart hat ihren Look. Die Ausstellung „Sporting Life“ erkundet die Geschichte der Sportbekleidung von den Anfängen der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bis heute. Dabei geht es nicht nur um Silhouette, Schnitt und neue Sportarten, sondern auch Innovationen, wie neue Textilien, deren Einfluss sich auch in der „normalen“ Mode niederschlägt. Insgesamt sind 100 Ausstellungsstücke zu sehen; die Schau läuft noch bis Mitte November.

“Sporting Life” exhibition by the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Swimming, dancing excercice – “Sporting Life” is an exhibition exploring the interrelation of sportswear and fashion. More than 100 items are on display, from the beginning of “sportswear” in the mid 19th century to examples of contemporary sports clothing . The visitors are invited to study not only the changing silhouette throughout time, but the improvements and innovations of textiles, too as well as the influence of sportswear on “regular” fashion. The exhibition is ongoing until mid November.

Hussein Chalayan Ausstellung in Paris. Noch bis zum 13. November lohnt es sich in Pariser Musem Les Arts Decoratifs vorbeizuschauen, den dort wird momentan das Werk Hussein Chalayans gewürdigt. Der in London lebende Designer mit zypriotischen Wurzlen gehört zu den einflussreichsten Designern der Jetztzeit und ist, wie kaum ein anderer Modemacher, bekannt für einen konzeptionellen-intellektuellen Angang an die Mode. Seine Kollektionen und Inszenierungen beschäftigen sich meist mit Zukunftsthemen und überzeugen nicht nur durch technische Innovation und einzigartige Ästehtik, sondern auch durch das Konzept dahinter. Wer sein Werk aus der Nähe betrachten will – die Kuratoren haben Chalayan die „Carte Blanche“ für die Ausstellung gegeben – ergo kann sich das Konzept sicher sehen lassen.

Hussein Chalayan exhibition in Paris. Until November 13th you have time to travel to the Parisian Musuem Les Arts Decoratifs to see the Hussein Chalayan exhibition; the London-based designer of Cypriot decent is known best for his conceptional, intellectual approach to fashion, his technical perfection and future-themed fashion shows. The curators gave a carte blanche to the designer which means the show is probably worth seeing.

Letzte Tage: Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty im Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Diese Woche ist die letzte Chance die Ausstellung über Alexander McQueen im Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York noch zu besichtigen! In der letzten Woche ist sie bis 21 Uhr geöffnet!

Helmut Lang Ausstellung in New York. Der österreichische Ex-Modemacher ist seit seinem Ausstieg aus dem Textil-Business unter die Künstler gegangen und wohnt abseits der Manhattaner Hektik im beschaulichen Long Island. Hier, in den East Hamptons, kann man momentan auch seine neue Ausstellung bewundern. In den den Räumlichkeiten des Fireplace Project ist noch bis zum 8. August seine Installation „Make it hard“ zu sehen, für die Lang 6000 Kleidungsstücke seiner ehemaligen Marke hat schreddern lassen! Auch eine Art seinem früheren Leben den endgültigen Laufpass zu geben…

Helmut Lang exhibition in New York. There’s currently a show by the Austrian ex-fashion designer and turned-artist Helmut Lang. For “Make it hard” at The Fireplace Project Lang has shredded 6000 of the garments by his former label. Looks like Lang has once again decided to leave the fashion world behind…

Balenciaga-Ausstellung in San Francisco.
Nach New York (wir berichteten) ist von Hamish Bowles kuratierte Ausstellung über den Modemacher Cristobál Balenciaga jetzt momentan in San Francisco zu sehen. Unter dem Titel „Balenciaga and Spain“ zeigt das de Young Museum aber eine vergrößere Schau mit fast doppelt so vielen Exponaten, wovon einige aus der hauseigenen Sammlung stammen, andere aus Privatbesitz und weitere aus renommierten Modemuseen aus der ganzen Welt. Auch das „House of Balenciaga“ hat 30 Exponate ausgeliehen. Die Ausstellung zeigt die Einflüsse der Kultur des Heimatlandes des Modemachers – von Stierkampfkleidungszitaten bis zu Einflüssen von royalen oder sakralen Einflüssen.
Die Ausstellung ist noch bis zum 4. Juli zu sehen; zur Ausstellung ist bei Skira Rizzoli ein Katalog erschienen.

Balenciaga exhibition in San Francisco.
If you happen to be in San Francisco until July 4th don’t miss to see the „Balenciaga and Spain“ exhibition which is currently on show at the de Young Museum . The show is an extended version of the show “Balenciaga: Spanish Master” show at Queen Sofía Spanish Institute in New York City originated in 2010. The de Young Museum added some pieces of its own archive, as well as 30 pieces by the „House of Balenciaga“ as well as loans by prestigious fashion museums from all over the world.
There’s also catalog of the exhibition published by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and Skira Rizzoli.

Zeitreise in Fotos: Ab sofort ist die Ausstellung „Von Konrad A. bis Jackie O.“ von Max Scheler in Berlin zu sehen. Max Scheler (1928 – 2003) war einer der bekanntesten deutschen Fotojournalisten. In den Sechziger Jahren war er unter anderem für den „Stern“ tätig und gründete später das Format „Geo“ mit, bei der auch als Bildchef fungierte. Die über 140 Bilder der Ausstellung dokumentieren das Leben einer vergangenen Ära in Deutschland, den USA und China. Sie zeigen Alltagsszenen als auch historische Ereignisse und Persönlichkeiten jener Zeit.

A journey in time in photos: the exhibition „Von Konrad A. bis Jackie O.“ has just opened. The exhibition displays more than 140 pictures by Max Scheler; Scheler (1928 – 2003) was one of Germany’s most acclaimed photo journalists. In the 60s he work for German magazine „Stern“ and co-founded the publication „Geo“. The images shown in the exhibition were taken in Germany, the USA and China and capture scenes from everyday life to historical events and figures of an bygone era.
Herb Ritts Ausstellung in der Berliner Galerie Camera Work.
Er gehört zu den ganz großen Namen der Modefotografie und sein Stil war und ist unverwechselbar: Herb Ritts. Der US-amerikanische Fotograf, der im Jahr 2002 im Alter von nur 50 Jahren starb, hat mit seiner klaren Schwarz-Weiß-Ästhetik die Modewelt in den Achtzigern und Neunzigern geprägt. Die Ausstellung in der Charlottenburger Galerie Camera Work stellt zurzeit einige seiner berühmten Werke aus. Alle Abzüge, die zu sehen sind, wurde noch zu Ritts‘ Lebzeiten angefertigt. Mit dabei sind bekannte Bilder von Cindy Crawford, aber auch Fotos von Berühmtheiten aus Hollywood wie Jack Nicholson. Neben Fotos machte Ritts später auch Videos – zum Beispiel Chris Issak’s „Wicked Games“, mit der nackten Helena Christensen am Strand (siehe unten)… Die Ausstellung ist noch bis zum 9. Juli zu sehen.

Herb Ritts exhibition in Berlin
Herb Rittsis one of fashion photography’s name drops: his black-and-white aesthetics, his clean imagery and iconic poses have made the US-photographer who died in 2002 at the age of 50, a legend.
Berlin-based gallery Camera Work is currently showing some of his best-known fashion images of models such as Cindy Crawford and celebrtiy shots of Hollywood stars like Jack Nicholson. Ritts also directed some videos by the way – such as Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Games” starring the nacked Helen Christensen on the beach (see below).
